After throat surgery in June I lost the ability to sing certain notes and speak in a loud voice. I croaked like a frog or squeaked like a clarinet when calling my pets, shouting a hello when a neighbor walked by , or saying anything in a loud voice. I also developed a persistent dry cough which was triggered by drinking cold water, walking into an air conditioned space, catching a whiff of perfume, humming a tune, etc. I’ve just completed ten sessions of vocal therapy with Abby and regained much of my singing voice and the ability to call out in a loud voice. The sudden croaking / squeaking sounds are gone. My coughing has subsided significantly.
Abby guided me through this recovery process. She gave me very easy weekly homework in bite-sized pieces, and she explained the rationale for each homework step in the healing process. Knowing the “why” is a motivating factor for me. She is also upbeat, supportive and encouraging. She is a good problem solver and can switch to a new healing strategy if any of the steps we are taking aren’t working well.
The exercises she gave me paid off very quickly. My singing voice improved almost immediately. She taught me new ways to use my speaking voice with less strain. The coughing has been harder to tackle but is improving, and I have exercises to do and strategies to use to reduce the coughing even more over time. I highly recommend Abby.
